Eastern Shore Farm Pastel

Soft Pastel Painting - 11"x15"

This farm is located only a few miles from my home. It has been abandoned for several years. It is such a beautiful, lonely scene and I have enjoyed seeing it for years. I have wanted to paint the scene for some time and have envisioned the painting with an impressionistic style. I completed it a few months ago and anyone who knows the farm will recognize that I have taken artistic license (as usual) with the scene.

The demo for my Open Studio group this week was on painting a giraffe. Most of the group worked on painting the head & neck portion of the animal. My students did wonderful work and I think we were all surprised at how much fun we had with this subject. The other images in this post are at stage one (the underpainting) & stage two of the painting. It was meant to be a quick and simple project. Hope you like my little giraffe!

This painting was so much fun to do. I put in no background because I wanted the painting to focus on the connection between mother and child, physically AND emotionally. The relationship between mother and child is almost magical. I was excited about creating a painting that celebrates that special bond. I hope you like it. Click the image for a larger view.

Another recent portrait of a baby, but this one of a little boy. Painting a baby's portrait is quite different from an adult. One must use a totally different palette and hard lines are rarely effective on the soft, sweet face of an infant. I loved doing this painting...especially portraying the adorable pouty lip expression.

I adore little boys! I have a son, several adorable nephews and a new grandson! Little boys are so much fun to observe as they go about their activities. We were fortunate enough to camp on the banks of a body of water that flows into the Chesapeake Bay earlier this spring. The fishing dock at Tall Pines Harbor was a favorite spot for various groups of little campers. They had such a grand time casting their rods and sharing fish stories that weekend. I never did see any of them catch a fish but it didn't dampen their spirits (or hopes for the big one) at all! Of course, I knew I would paint them and I had so much fun with this one that I will be doing a series of Young Fishermen paintings! Click the image for a better view. I hope you like this one. Little Boys Fishing - First Figure in Painting

This painting promises to be a fun one! It tells the story of three little boys out for a day of fishing. These little guys were so in to casting their rods that I'm sure that their bait was never still in the water long enough to entice a fish! This shows a close-up of the first llittle fellow casting his rod into the water. I generally work on a toned canvas and that is why you see the sienna-colored background with my sketch on it right now. Stay posted for the final painting. This one was so much fun to paint. This couple was on a beach at the Outer Banks, watching their two adorable little boys as they were trying to get a kite into the air. I captured their expressions just as the kite finally took flight. Their joy (and relief!) in their children's accomplishment was so obvious, I knew I would paint this image someday. Boat Moored on Chincoteague Bay

This local scene is one I have painted before. The other painting, Two Boats at Twilight, is in oil. You can find that painting in an older post on this blog. It is so much fun to paint similar scenes in more than one medium as the results and the process are really quite different. This painting is one that is difficult to photograph. In reality, the original has a softer, more transparent quality to it. The lens did not seem to like the combined complement colors of blue and orange! As most artists know, complements are beautiful when placed next to each other in a painting. However, when mixed together they can turn to neutral...often referred to as mud! I suppose the camera does some form of mixing which alters the look of the painting a bit. After some adjusting, I feel this is a fairly good representation of the painting. I hope you like it. Since I live on the east coast, a blue heron standing in reeds is not an uncommon site. However, I don't think I could ever see one of these majestic birds and not react with amazement. They are simply graceful and powerful at the same time. I enjoyed painting this one and look forward to doing it in a larger size. The Thomas Point Light is an active light station located on the Chesapeake Bay just south of Annapolis, Maryland. I am a fan of lighthouses and this one has always fascinated me. It is the only screw-pile light station still in its original location off of the Maryland shore. I enjoyed painting this familiar landmark and would love to do a series of lighthouses. My weekly open studio workshop at the Delmarva Discovery Center demo this week was about painting the master image for a Christmas Card. I also talked about how to send them to get them printed and a little about how to print them at home. I painted this little folk-art-style church scene as an example. We had fun deciding what the participants wanted to paint for their own cards and some actually painted theirs. I generally do not send cards but may actually send a few this year. This little girl was an onlooker at last year's skipjack races. She was standing on a bulkhead at the shore with her parents or maybe her grandparents nearby when I snapped a photo. She had been a bit sunburned from the previous day and was wearing this very large hat - probably not her choice but her grandmother's. I thought she was absolutely adorable and was sure I'd want to paint her some day and here it is!

Student Exhibit at Delmarva Discovery Center

Amazed at My Student's First Art Exhibit

The Delmarva Discovery Center had its Grand Opening on June 25th. Among all of the museum exhibits and displays and in the middle of all the festivities, the Center's first student art exhibit was taking place. It was an incredibly enjoyable experience to see many of my students mingling with the crowd, enjoying the reaction and enthusiasm for the many paintings they had on display. Most of the work submitted was by students at the beginner level. You can imagine, I felt sort of like a proud parent taking it all in! Thanks to the Center for its commitment to the art program and to my wonderful students for stepping out onto a brand new stage! More to come! Thanks to student, Jan Coulbourne for allowing me to digitally "play" with her photo.

Shelltown Dock

This is a local working dock that we often pass when we are out boating. It is charming even today but my goal in painting it is to portray it as it might have been back in the sixties. This is a painting that I did for my advanced beginner/intermediate class. My current students are such a congenial group, having taken several class series' from me at the Delmarva Discovery Center. They enjoy one another and are quite serious about learning all about watercolor painting. Maybe you should consider some art classes! It can change your life. I hope you enjoy the painting. This one was lots of fun to do. This is a painting of Chloe, our 4 month old cocker spaniel. Yes, she actually does have eyebrows! She is adorable and has finally convinced our 6 year old clumber spaniel that she is pretty loveable. We had to keep them separated for almost two months while he adjusted to her. That's another story and one that is too lengthy to go into! I hope you like this painting as much as I do.

I painted this using a photo reference that I shot one day on my way into my doctor's office last summer. They had a large pot of gorgeous hibiscus' plants on the sidewalk and I fortunately had my camera in the car. It was a beautiful, sunny day and the photo turned out great. This is my first venture into "pouring watercolor" and the style is quite different than what I usually do. It was fun! This is 11"x 14" on 300 lb cold press paper using my new Daniel Smith paints. This painting is an example of a simple still life. I painted it to use as the project for my Still Life in Watercolor class. We started this week and my students had fun learning how to create the textured background. This week we talked about composition and how the rule of thirds and the golden section can help you create a more appealing painting. Demonstrating Technique For a Class Watercolor Study

I am having a wonderful time with my morning class and evening class of watercolor students. This evening, my class wanted to know why I hadn't posted a photo of them on my blog since I have my morning class students posted. Needless to say, I will be featuring the evening class soon! In this photo, I am demonstrating a graded wash for a landscape study we'll be working on. As you can tell by the intent look on the faces of these students, they are seriously hooked on watercolor painting. You could be too! Just look for a class near you!

I love the Pocomoke River and the Delmarva Discovery Center has asked me to incorporate the river and related flora and fauna into the projects for my watercolor classes. This is the project painting for my level II beginner's class that starts tomorrow. It's not too late to register for level I & II! Click here for more info. This bench is on one of the docks by the river. I have used a limited palette to emphasize the importance of values in a painting. I have taken liberties with the trees and created primarily pines on the far shore although cypress trees are the most prevalent in that area. I often sit on that bench with my dog when we've been out walking. This day it was cold and misty. Not a great day to linger but a good opportunity for taking photos to use for painting reference. I hope you enjoy the painting.

I am so fortunate to have two wonderful groups of beginner watercolor students who are energized, anxious to learn and just a whole lot of fun! This is our final week of the series of four classes and they have amazed me at how quickly they have progressed. I look forward to the next series of beginner I and beginner II classes at the Delmarva Discovery Center. They are starting the second week of March. My watercolor classes at the Delmarva Discovery Center have been a lot of fun to date. We are going into our third week and have covered many areas such as brushes, paper and other supplies as well as color mixing and procedures such as washes and glazing. We will complete two small painted studies and a full size watercolor painting. I am fortunate to have a great group of students in both our morning and our evening classes. Productivity for the Working Artist

Do you hate a messy workspace as much as I do? Is it possible to be effective and productive when one must work on top of a heap of documents, sketches, notepads and other items? In my case the art clutter mingles with the office clutter which creates total chaos. So why do we allow this clutter in our lives? Maybe its because we don't prioritize effectively. Okay, so maybe procrastination is also involved. The sketch above says it all. I doodled in my sketchbook last evening as I listened to The Road to Peak Productivity, by productivity expert, Leslie Shreve, presented by Alyson Stanfield (http://www.artbizcoach.com ). The teleseminar, now available as an audio program, offered innovative tips on increasing productivity through creating an effective organizational system. It provided much room for thought. Here's my plan. I will be creating a system to keep the "to do" stacks from forming on my art table and office desk. Since I have two work flow centers in my studio, I've brought in a two drawer file cabinet to house items related to artwork and items that are office related. A "current" file will be in the front of each drawer for items related to today's tasks. Items remaining in the file by day's end is high priority the following day. I will examine and handle each item and file or trash it on a daily basis. I know that I am not alone in striving to be more productive so I will let you know my progress as I complete the program I have laid out for myself. Oh yes...this is only the first step!

We Had a Wonderful Time at The Globe's Recent Opening

Although my 19 favorite paintings are hanging in my solo show in the Foyer Gallery at The Art Institute & Gallery, I also have some photography and digital artwork currently at the Globe's Balcony Gallery exhibit. It's a fun show because the theme is open so there is a variety of work there. If you get to go, be sure to enjoy a meal there. The food is always so fresh and delicious and the atmosphere is so warm and delightful. Oh...and the Allagash with orange is sure to give you a fresh outlook on life! My husband and I highly recommend it!

I enjoy taking my camera on visits to Assateague National Wildlife Refuge to take photos of the beautiful seashore and the awesome wildlife there. The Great Egret fishes in shallow water, standing motionless and spearing its prey with its long, yellow bill. It is a huge bird, standing at least 3 feet tall with a wingspan in excess of 4 feet wide. They are simply majestic and graceful. This fellow was basking in the sun on an April day. He was quite patient as I snapped several shots of him. I always enjoy painting birds and this one was no exception. Click on the image for a larger view. This beautiful scene is one that we see on the way home from church. This is a typical view of an Eastern Shore marsh. This day the skies were blue with big puffs of clouds that reflected in the still, slick water. There were birds flying in the distance which completed the scene. This is a scene from the bank of windows inside a local restaurant, Wright's Seafood Restaurant. It's one of our favorite places for seafood and this wonderful view is of the Chincoteague Bay with Wallops Island back at the horizon. Click the image for a better view. Wallops Island is home to a NASA installation here on the east coast. I hope you enjoy the view as we always do! This was interesting to paint since the orange sherbet sky reflected in the water presented a new challange. Since I also took a photo of our dinner that evening, I think I'll post it too! We live near several wonderful beaches. Even if I ignored all other sources of inspiration, I would have more than enough just focusing on human interaction at the beach! This little boy is being encourged by his grandfather to come into the water with him. The water is cold and it's rough and even though he pictures himself riding the waves on his boogie board, he is hesitant to make the plunge. Solo Exhibit at The Art Institute & Gallery

For the first time in almost a year, my easel and my watercolor table have no works in progress on them! Yesterday we delivered all of the artwork (19 paintings!) to the Art Institute & Gallery in Salisbury for my solo exhibit in their Foyer Gallery. Photos of the exhibit are above. The opening reception is this Friday from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. My show hangs until November 15th. The solo exhibit coincides with the AI&G's Fall member's show. The theme this year is "On the Waterfront" and since I saw them hanging the show yesterday, I can tell you it's wonderful! Bill Kerbin, of the the Daily Times interviewed me for an article in the Worcester County Times section of the newspaper. Click here for the link to the article. I really love doing commissioned work. Collaborating with a client to bring their vision to reality is extremely rewarding in the creative sense. In the case of digital artwork, it is amazingly affordable and makes a wonderful keepsake and gift.

I was hired to create an edgey and colorful digital artwork from a photo of this public building where my client worked. This is to be a gift for a co-worker who is moving on to another job. The photograph that was provided was a good candidate but the building itself was not exactly picturesque. As you can see from the photograph, there was the peeling paint, obtrusive electric lines, an unattractive sign on the building and a neighboring car and house to contend with. My client is a delightful person who knows precisely what she wants so I was able to create the artwork fairly quickly. All of the offending elements were removed and the desired charm was effectively applied. I'm very happy to report that she is quite pleased with the results. The digital image is off to the printer today and it will be shipped to the client tomorrow.

Commissioned Painting - The Watercolor Study is in a Previous Post

The client who commisioned this work asked me to do this painting for his wife who "has a soft spot for chickadees". I loved doing this painting as I am a chickadee fan as well. They flit around my feeders, enjoying the seeds, sometimes being chased away by the threatening presence of the blackbird bullies. I have hundreds of photographs I have taken of them and never tire of their charming form. They, along with the titmouse visitors, are among my favorites. My client's wife is having a birthday soon and this will be his gift to her. I must say, I have really enjoyed working with him on this project. He requested a suggested background of the vibrant colors of autumn so I went bold with the colors surrounding this little fellow. The painting will be shipped to its new home this week. This painting illustrates a car going into a curve on a rain-slick track. It was fun figuring out how to make rain spray and mist under the tires and creating the reflections in the wet track. We had a wonderful time at the at the Globe's Delmarva Architecture show opening last evening. It was such fun to view so many familiar buildings and Eastern Shore locations as interpreted by the many exhibiting artists and photographers. We were accompanied by dear friends and after the Globe Opening, we strolled about Berlin attending some of the other galleries that were open for Second Friday. At the Water's Edge Gallery reception, we enjoyed viewing the work of Faith Lord and Pete Cosby. A special treat was our visit with the charming and distinguished Patrick Henry and his lovely wife at their reception at the The Patrick Henry Gallery. Pat has that rare ability to paint in a variety of styles, all equally well. What a delight it was to chat with them. His work is wonderful and they are so hospitable to visitors. If you're ever in the area of Berlin, Maryland on the second Friday of the month, be sure to visit some of the galleries there and enjoy the art of the local artists. It's quite a treat!

Many of you know that I am an amateur photographer. To combine this passion with art is the greatest! To create this effect, I modify and creatively rework my image in my photo programs (I usually use two programs) using various techniques to create an edgy, contemporary photographic image. I'd love to know what you think. These images are featured in the Globe Theater's Balcony Gallery Eastern Shore Architecture show (see blog entry below). We had dinner there last evening and previewed the show and it's really wonderful. "Sushi Tonight at The Globe" was hanging directly behind the Sushi chef. He seemed to be pleased about this. It made me pretty happy, too. These images (click image to enlarge) represent three of the five digital artworks that I have hanging at the show.

The Pocomoke River meanders through our town and the dock by this bridge is a favorite spot of mine. There is always a flock of friendly and inquisitive seagulls and various other water birds swimming and flying about, perching on the dock pilings and enjoying the river. I love taking my camera and snapping shots of the beautiful river, bridge, birds and the boats that are docked there. For decades, we have taken full advantage of this wonderful natural resource, taking the boats out to picnic at the parks along the river banks, to hike and to waterski. I was actually baptized as an adult in that river with all of my loved ones and church family around me! The ties that bind me to this beautiful river are very strong.

Recently, the Delmarva Discovery Center which is located on the riverfront, opened and is a wonderful resource of history and information about the river.

The Porsche Speedster in this painting is from the late fifties. It is very similar to the 1961 Porsche 356B Coupe my husband owned when we got married back in 1972. We drove it on our honeymoon to the Smokey Mountains. As I painted today, the memories came flooding back and just enhanced the painting experience. The setting is a country road in Virginia called Taylor Landing Road. We were there recently, visiting a friend on a Sunday Afternoon. I knew that road with those massive pine trees would make it into a painting soon and here they are! I will add a closeup for detail. Prints are available on Ebay. This one was fun to do. I created this painting and the Tulips in Pitcher oil painting for an exhibit at The Art Institue & Gallery. In this painting, the same person is shown at differing stages of life starting with the child in the foreground depicting the carefree days of the very young child when one has few worries. In the midground, she is in her middle years when all you seem to do is worry especially about physical appearance. Finally she is content to soak up the sun, enjoying the blue of the sky and the feel of the ocean...hopefully much wiser and more at peace. Above are my three paintings that have been accepted for the Spring Arts Night Exhibit. The show opens tonight, May 2nd at 5:00PM and goes through July 5th. The theme is "Ocean" which includes artwork related to the ocean...not just images of the ocean itself. I also inserted a photo of a closeup of the Globe's marquee.

Above are my photographs accepted for the Spring Arts Night Exhibit. When we dropped off my artwork we had a nice visit with one of the delightful owners, Jennifer David. We stayed for dinner, enjoying the great music of The Mood Swingers. The Globe features performers on their stage most nights and the food is outstanding...just a great place to go for drinks, dinner and entertainment! Serenity on the Pocomoke River

I love spicy food and the fresher the better! I am famous for my spicy chili. When my son asked me for my recipe, he added fresh jalepenos to his batch. WOW, was that fantastic! It adds a fresh spiciness that's really yummy. That’s how I make it for my husband and I now. These three red chili peppers were so warm in color, I decided to use a cooler brown for the background. I think the contrast is pretty interesting. What do you think? This painting is a bit more spontaneous than many of my paintings and I really like the looseness that resulted. I hope you do too! I enjoyed painting and eating this pear and am happy to say it tasted as good as it looked. Have you ever eaten pear butter? It is very much like apple butter but with it's own rich flavor. My mom has fruit trees on her property and last summer while visiting, my cousin Dean made pear butter. It was delicious! It is surprising how very popular the pear is as an object to paint. Summer is my favorite time of the year. My husband loves to plant a few tomato and pepper plants each year. We wait and wait, forever it seems, until he is finally able to harvest one or two. We eat them faster than they can ripen...for awhile. All of a sudden we're giving them to friends and family because they're coming off faster than we can eat them! I enjoyed painting this beautiful tomato in anticipation of what's to come!

This little fellow was having fun at the park with his mom. He was obviously trying to make the stones skip across the surface of the water but not quite succeeding. He still seemed to be delighted at the "kurplunk!" sound and the ripples that resulted with each toss. This little painting is a study for a larger painting in the future.

This little Yellow Warbler, also known as the Dendroica Petechiais, is a songbird and has a wingspan of only 6 to 8 inches and feeds on insects and spiders. Yellow Warblers sing sweetly from the branches of the trees where they build their cup nests. I find that I really enjoy painting birds and learning about them. This one was particularly fun to do!

Grazing on the California Coast-Big Sur Cow Series

We recently took a week to drive up Highway 1 along the California Coast to San Francisco and stayed a couple of days in the Monterey and Carmel area. On a drive along the Big Sur coastline, we saw this herd of cows grazing the land with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean adjacent to Big Sur. This big fellow seemed as curious about us as we were about him. It seemed quite a site to see these cows ambling along on this gorgeous and valuable landscape. I plan to do several paintings inspired by our Big Sur excursion.
